Webinar on Women in Engineering

KLU ASME conducted the first Webinar session so far for interaction of the student engineers with experienced people elsewhere.KLU ASME considered our dedicated former vice-chairperson would be the best people to kick start our webinar sessions. She is a determined and hardworking lady who always has the enthusiasm and confidence to pursue her desires. She never bounded herself into any limitations set by the society and has set an example for all the girl students in the University she has graduated.

The former Vice-chairperson of KLU ASME, Ms. M. Satya Sri pursuing her Masters in the department of Aerospace & Engineer Mechanics from University of Cincinnati, Ohio joined us through web to deliver a talk to the girl students especially about "Women Empowerment". This Webinar session was organised to foster the girl students to step forward to pursue their desires. It was intended to make them realise that they were nowhere less than their fellow beings.

Ms. Satya Sri begun with a story of a girl who on a visit to a toy shop, was surprised seeing more of toys meant for boys. This was the first time that the girl noticed that apart from the gender bias the girls are facing in the other fields, there is a diversity shown even in the toys. She got furious about it and determined to do something about it. So the girl struck with a Entrepreneurial idea for her. She started a toy making industry that manufactured toys mostly meant for girls. The moral of this story is that we should always derive a entrepreneurial opportunity for ourselves from what we see, do and think. She said that we girls are no less
than the boys and assured us with a result of a survey that stated " Men and Women have the whole equal aptitude for math and science".

She put forward a few facts for us:

  • Computer program was invented before the computer and the first computer programmer was a lady named Ada Lovelace.
  • Women outperform men in multitasking paradigms.
  • Thomas Malone, MIT stated by a survey that "Women make a team smarter".
  • Most of the women have earned back their jobs after recession but men have not.
  • The CEO's of many leading companies like Pepsi.co , GM, HP, IBM. Lockheed Martin, Xerox corporation and many others are women.

Talking about Women Entrepreneurship, Ms. Satya advised to always be determined to groom our ideas into a entrepreneurship opportunity. She advised that any idea we have today may not be polished and fully planned but to keep up the desire and work on it so that even though we may lack the support & opportunity now, we may succeed later.

Ms. Satya asked the girls to look out for a points:

  • Be rational
  • Take the best optimal path for your career
  • Decide what you want to do
  • Always do a SWOT analysis
  • Socialize and try to communicate with people from different places, colleges and disciplines. Take SPDC and visits to other colleges as an opportunity to socialize.
  • Always try to make a lot of friends.
  • In ASME, try to interact with juniors, seniors and faculty.
  • It is always better to have a good network.

Ms. Satya guided the girls on how to build up their career in Indian air force, navy and army. She also told the girls that there are a lot of extra & co-curricular activities in US. One always has the opportunity and chances of distracting so it is important to focus on your work apart from involving in these activities.

She told the girls that it is important to have a basics of all the multidisciplinary courses.

  • Control Systems
  • Mechatronics
  • Robotics
  • Numerical Methods & Simulation Methods for Engineers & Scientists
  • Take up courses on open courseware MIT & Stranford University.
  • Work on softwares extensively like MATLAB, Simulink, Sim Mechanics. Lab view, Tecpot, ANYSYS etc.
  • Work on diverse projects- she suggested to work on at least 2-3 projects per semester and try to work in groups as we can always learn more when in groups.

The newest fever everybody has is to study abroad so she put some light on the different aspects of Study abroad. To start with she warned the girls to manage:

  • Lot of course load
  • F1 status
  • stress
  • Health Issues
  • Financial Issues
  • Safety Issues
  • Weather Conditions
  • Social & Family related issues

She also threw some light on the funding opportunities one has while studying abroad.

  • Non-technical Part time jobs
  • Technical Part time jobs
  • Co-ops
  • Internships
  • Teaching Assistantship
  • Research Assistantship
  • University Grant

The importance of associating with the student clubs during the stay in University was very well explained by Ms. Satya. It is always good to get associated with two clubs to enhance and discover one's own skills on team work and interaction. We can always learn more and have fun when working in groups. With this she was open for questions.

Queries:

Q) I am planning to pursue my Masters in VLSI, could you tell me about the VLSI opportunities?
- Hari Priya
Ans:
The VLSI opportunities are going low these days and the boom for this field is almost saturated now so it is better to take up any other interested field. Computer Networks seem to be going pretty well.

Q) Could you give some tips before we apply for M.Sc?
-Prasanna
Ans:
1. Lot of research about the University
2. Talk with seniors
3. Write mails to the professors of that university for any queries. They may be busy and so may not reply but keep on mailing them. They would certainly reply sometime. It is never bad to ask questions!

Q) I have heard that the fee waivers are not so good compared to past times. could you throw some light on it?
-Gayatri
Ans:
Scholarships are pretty good. It is difficult to earn a scholarship in the first semester itself but you can try hard for one. We need to interact with the professors and work hard in academics besides having a extracurricular activities to earn a scholarship from the second semester.
Aim for a GRE score greater than 315 and a TOEFL score more than 105 would be good enough. If you wish to settle in US, it is better to have work experience before taking up Masters.

Q) How safe is it for a girl student go for studying abroad all alone? What kind of part time jobs would you prefer for the girls to do?
-Sushmitha
Ans:
It is always for anybody to stay in any country. By the time you complete our UG, you would be about 20 or 21, so it is time you step out of your hometown and your comfort zone to the outer world. Try to be independent. Initially you may face problem as you have to do all the household chores by yourself alongside managing your academics but slowly you will be able to handle it perfectly. It is very safe for a girl to study and work here at any time. It is important that you comfort your family and assure them that you are ok.
Anybody can take any kind of part time job here. You can try for on campus jobs like assistantship or helping out in library or in cafeteria. There are also desk jobs, jobs for drafting minutes, scheduling meetings, assisting a manager, website management, maintaining course work , and part time jobs in companies.

Q) Which is better taking up Masters after UG or get industrial experience and then go for Masters?
-Tripura
Ans:
It is always better to have some exposure to the industry before applying for masters but not everybody gets a core job in the interested field so it is still ok if you take up Masters after your UG.

Q) What are the scholarship criteria apart from the academics?
-Tripura
Ans:
Publishing a paper in your area of interest would fetch you a chance to earn a scholarship.
Ms. Satya rendered a good amount of knowledge to all the girls regarding their career and further studies opportunities. All the girls were thankful to her for being a "information bank" for them.

Prof. Shyam Prasad Sir thanked Ms. Satya to have come on web in their early morning hours to interact with the students. Also, sir motivated the girls to take Ms. Satya as an inspiration and move forward to reach their goals. Sir shared the journey of Ms. Satya as an ASME member when in K.L. University. He suggested the girls:

  • To come out of your bounds and get exposed to the world
  • Focus and work
  • Try to innovate
  • Decide your goals and desires by the end of second year of UG
  • Every discipline is good and useful
  • Try to get into the depths of the course and not be left at the layer
  • Work on you interests
  • Know the requirement of your interests
  • Be the initiator and set an example to build up a culture & develop "Women in Engineering"
  • Pressure and target activates your brain
  • Build up your passion

Sir informed everybody that KLU ASME wishes to conduct webinar sessions every weekend and everybody is invited to be a part of it. Anybody can drop in to take part or be a part of KLU ASME. The session completed with reaching the objective of our meet and satisfied faces of the audience.
